Is Miley Cyrus Too Skinny? Latest Photos Show Super Thin Miley

Filed under:

Miley Cyrus‘ weight loss has been under the microscope lately–is Miley getting too skinny?

Miley was spotted outside a Miami Beach hotel earlier this week, wearing a tank mini dress and looking pretty thin.

Of course, Miley has credited her gluten-free diet as the secret to her weight loss success, and she’s been seen coming and going from pilates classes almost daily.

Her diet and exercise regimen is definitely working–maybe too well?

In April, Miley sounded off to critics who said she was anorexic, sharing her gluten-free lifestyle on Twitter, writing: “For everyone calling me anorexic, I have a gluten and lactose allergy. It’s not about weight–it’s about health. Gluten is crap anyway!”

Miley looks like she’s ever shrinking, but maybe it’s just a good diet and exercise plan? Stay healthy, Miley!

Do you think Miley looks too skinny or healthy?

The Wanted’s New Music Video Shoot Causes Blackout in Los Angeles

Filed under:

When they aren’t singing karaoke in Irish pubs (just ask Tom Parker) or driving the women totally crazy, what are the boys of the U.K band The Wanted doing when they visit good ol’ Los Angeles?…

Recently while in town, the group recorded the music video for their tune, “Chasing The Sun.”

During the taping, the band’s huge video production caused a power cut, leaving many L.A. residents without electricity.

Uh-oh.

Obviously, the blown transformer was a huge inconvenience but everything is cool now. The handsome men were quick to apologize to those affected in the neighborhood!

(They really should consider being more “green” like the Dave Matthews Band!)

Watch The Wanted sing “Chasing The Sun” from their awesome AOL Sessions below:

Disney to Stage ‘Brave’ Premiere at Grand Opening of Dolby Theatre

Disney and Pixar will stage the world premiere of “Brave” at the grand opening of the newly renamed Dolby Theatre, the studio announced Friday.

The premiere is part of the Los Angeles Film Festival, which kicks off June 14.

“Brave,” which hits theaters June 22, is Pixar’s first film since last year’s “Cars 2.”

Set in the Scottish Highlands, it features  Pixar's first female protagonist, which L.A. Film Festival director Stephanie Allain said made it an ideal part of the program.

“It fits perfectly with our celebration of Women in Animation programming we’ll be holding during the Festival,” she said in a statement.

“Brave” features the voices of Kelly Macdonald, Emma Thompson, Craig Ferguson, Julie Walters and others. Macdonald voices the main character, Merida.

The Dolby had been named the Kodak Theatre since 2000. However, earlier this year Kodak extricated itself from that sponsorship due to its ongoing bankruptcy.

Dolby is revamping the 3,400-seat theater, which hosts the Academy Awards, enabling it for 3D and implementing its Atmos sound technology.

CW Redeveloping ‘Hunger Games’-Like ‘Selection’; ‘Deadman’ Not Dead

The CW is redeveloping "The Selection," a "Hunger Games"-like series that it passed on for the 2012-13 season — and the network continues to develop a series about the D.C. comics hero Deadman, network president Mark Pedowitz said Thursday.

Pedowitz spoke to reporters after the network unveiled its 2012-13 lineup to advertisers, including another drama based on a D.C. comics hero, the gritty "Arrow." He said he planned to meet with the producers of "The Selection," based on the book by Kiera Cass, to discuss it. He said it was too soon to say whether the show will be recast. "Friday Night Lights" star Aimee Teegarden had been cast in the lead.

Also read: Can CW's 'The Selection' Catch 'Hunger Games'' Fire?

Like "The Hunger Games," is about a young girl in a futuristic, war-torn nation who is chosen by lottery to compete for fame and fortune against a backdrop of hunger and carnage. Unlike the "Hunger Games"' Katniss Everdeen, the girl at the center of "The Selection" is competing for the affections of a prince, not killing other teenagers.

"Supernatural" creator Eric Kripke, who also created NBC's upcoming "Revolution," is developing the Deadman series.

Cannes 2012: Posing and Dancing With Marion Cotillard and Bill Murray

Marion Cotillard and Jacques Audiard were the luminaries on Thursday at Cannes, with the almost universally well-received "Rust and Bone" staking a claim to be in the awards picture (though some naysayers disagree). Cotillard in particular is drawing some very, very early awards heat, as well as proving irresistible to just about every photographer on the Croisette.

The film, director Audiard said at a press conference, was a direct reaction to his last movie, the prison-set Oscar nominee "A Prophet." According to the AP's Jill Lawless, Audiard described that film as "very male," while "Rust and Bone" was designed to be "full of light and space."

Also read: Cannes Review: In 'Rust and Bone,' Jacques Audiard Burrows in Soul of Trauma

But Audiard's version of lightness can also be dark and difficult. "I said to Jacques [after reading the script], 'I'm a bit scared, I don't know how this is going to work,'" Cotillard said of playing a woman who loses her legs in an accident. "And he said, 'I don't know either.'"

Meanwhile, the groundswell of protest over the absence of competition films directed by women continues to grow: A petition now circulating at the festival has drawn more than 800 signatures, including those of "Toy Story 3" producer Darla Anderson and "My Brilliant Career" director Gillian Armstrong. (Also signing: Gloria Steinem.)

"We call for Cannes, and other film festivals worldwide to commit to transparency and equality in the selection process of these films," reads part of the petition, which is hosted at change.org. "We judge films as human beings, shaped by our own perspectives and experiences. It is vital, therefore, that there be equality and diversity at the point of selection."

As the petition was picking up signatures, though, IFP, the Calvin Klein Collection and euphoria Calvin Klein threw a party to celebrate Women in Film. The guest list wasn't long on women directors, but plenty of actresses were on hand, among them Naomi Watts, Jada Pinkett Smith, juror Diane Kruger, Jessica Chastain (right) and Shailene Woodley (left).

Ben Stiller and Chris Rock were there, too. They're not women in film, and they don’t have a movie in the competition – but they're two of the voices in "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," and the last few years it's practically guaranteed that DreamWorks Animation's big summer release will get a sneak preview at Cannes.

The Marche du Film marketplace isn't an official part of the Cannes Film Festival, but it's definitely a part of the Cannes experience. And amid the deal-making and schlock-hawking, director/writer/producer Guillermo del Toro showed up via video link on Wednesday to talk about the version of "Pinocchio" he's planning.

The film, del Toro told a overflowing room full of buyers (as reported by Stuart Kemp), will be done in 3D and stop-motion, and won't be ready until 2014. It'll be co-directed by Mark Gustafson and del Toro, who'd planned to executive produce until he found the lure of the dark, gothic adaptation too strong to resist. Daniel Radcliffe, Christopher Walken and singer Tom Waits are among the voice talent he's considering.

Finally, here are a couple of dispatches from late Wednesday night, in the wee hours as the post-premiere party for "Moonrise Kingdom" was winding down. In the New York Times, Manohla Dargis rhapsodizes about the dessert (which apparently involved lights and plastic cups of "haute cuisine soft-serve" embedded in blocks of ice), and responds to Bill Murray's question about how she liked the film by calling it one of Wes Anderson's "supreme achievements."

Vulture's Jada Yuan picks up the story from there, and says the party didn't really get going until Murray gave in to the entreaties of the film's young cast members and hit the dance floor.

"It was a scene of such next-level adorability that nearly everyone in the immediate vicinity pulled out a camera phone," writes Yuan, who says she later joined in a group circle dance that numbered at least 20 and was "better than chocolate," in the opinion of the movie's preteen stars.

Vampire Diaries season 4 Mike Trevino talks new Tyler,Klaus spoilers & more, new clip. Hollywood Life recently caught up to Vampire Diaries, werewolf Tyler Lockwood, star Michael Trevino at the recent CW Upfronts event, and he revealed what he’d like to see go down in season 4,and more (video below). In the clip, Mike said that he wants to play Klaus a little bit more in season 4,and see how far they can go with the whole Klaus/Tyler body switch. He also commented on seeing how far the Klaus/Caroline relationship can go without Klaus coming in,and messing up everything. He also talked about how difficult it is too shoot those wicked werewolf transformation scenes. It takes very long hours to shoot them, and he has to growl into a mic for long periods of time, which is totally not flattering. But,yeah,he was really adamant about wanting to play, Klaus’ character a little while longer,so we may see him play Klaus for a few more episodes when season 4 stars back up. Check it out, below.

Anthony Bourdain’s First Novel Heads to the Big Screen

Celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain is already a star on the small screen. Now his work will wind its way to the multiplex.

Dignity Film Finance, a Los Angeles-based production company headed by Maggie Monteith, unveiled a slate of three films her company is financing and producing in 2012.

One of them is an adaptation of Bourdain’s bestselling novel “Bone in the Throat,” to be produced by Lenny Beckerman and Peter Heslop, who co-produced “The King’s Speech.”

Bourdain is best known as a chef and the author of non-fiction, food-related books like “Kitchen Confidential” and “No Reservations.” The latter is also the name of his Emmy Award-winning show on The Travel Channel.

However, he has also penned three novels, the first of which was “Bone in the Throat.”

The mafia caper doesn’t exactly leave the restaurant world, as it follows a chef caught between the mob and the law. The book was set in New York City, but director Graham Henman and co-writer Mark Townsend have moved it to London.

"With the exception of a few gems, Hollywood has been deficient in making a good restaurant film. With “Bone in the Throat” I am looking forward to doing just that and setting the film in London will allow me to take advantage of a city where the food scene is simply on fire,” Henman said in a statement. “This film will capture my passionate love of food and the restaurant world in what I expect to be a riveting ‘culinary noir.’”

Dignity's other two films are "Spy vs. Stu," a buddy action flick, and "Closer to Fine."

Facebook Goes Public, Biggest Tech IPO in History

Like it, share it, post it in the live stream — Facebook is now a public company.

The social network's co-founder Mark Zuckerberg rang the Nasdaq opening bell from Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif., on Friday, officially kicking off the biggest tech initial public offering in history.

After more than a year of pent-up anticipation and fevered speculation, Facebook priced its IPO at $38 a share, setting it up to raise $16 billion. The company's valuation is expected to rise to north of $100 billion.

Also read: Facebook IPO: 5 Warning Signs That Have Investors Worried

Facebook's public debut is the third largest IPO in U.S. history, behind the  $19.7 billion raised by Visa in 2008 and the $18.1 billion generated by  General Motors in 2010, according to Reuters.

Questions ranging from Facebook's troublesome mobile app to its pricey acquisition of the photo sharing program Instagram continue to inspire debate among analysts. Still less than a decade after Zuckerberg revolutionized the way the world interacts digitally, the social networking platform is about to become extremely well-capitalized.

For a certain "hacker" in Menlo Park, that translates into a whole lot of hoodies.

Amber Portwood Released From Jail, Has a Lot on Plate

Amber Portwood has been released from jail. She got sprung yesterday.

The troubled Teen Mom star was placed back behind bars last week after violating the terms of her probation by failing to appear in an Indiana court.

The 22-year-old allegedly lied about a medical condition to get out of a drug test. Her probation officer called the bluff, asking her doctor directly.

Some very sleepy-eyed Amber Portwood mug shots soon followed.

Amber Screams

How’s the reality star feeling now that she’s back on the other side?

“OK,” Amber told E! News. “Just hustling. I’ve got a lot on my plate.”

Naturally.

According to her brother, Shawn Portwood, Amber’s “new goal is to join the military.” Yes, apparently he’s serious. “She was going to work hard to get her charge reduced,” added Shawn. “She’s been doing so well.”

The Teen Mom trailer would suggest otherwise, but here’s hoping.

Cannes Review: In ‘Rust and Bone’ Jacques Audiard Burrows in Soul of Trauma

From the mind, body, heart and soul of Jacques Audiard comes “Rust and Bone” ("De rouille et d'os"), a beautifully rendered, deeply felt film about how traumatic events can sometimes point us in the right direction.

Audiard, like most modern French filmmakers, does not want to force his story into an inorganic formula with three acts, a catalytic incident, a climax and a resolution.  If those elements are there, no one has carved off the fat. And the same way fat makes meat taste so much better, "Rust and Bone" is made better because of the organic way he lets his characters breathe and allows the intricacies of their motivations to play out.

Co-written by Audiard and Thomas Bidegain, “Rust and Bone” begins with a wayward Alain (Matthias Schoenaerts) caring for his son the only way he knows how: he finds discarded food if they're hungry, he steals a camera if they want to take photos and he takes nickel-and-dime jobs where he can.

His son's mother is out of the picture — drugs, who knows what else.  And here's this little five-year-old boy, tender and vulnerable, trusting in his father to make it all okay.  From the outset, Audiard makes it clear that this is going to be very different from his searing masterpiece, “Un Prophete.”

Soon enough, Alain meets Stephanie, the superb Marion Cotillard as an orca trainer, whose own life is forever changed by a freak accident during one of the live shows.

Where the beautiful Stephanie had rejected Alain's advances before she lost her legs, now that her world has been shattered she reaches out to him. And remarkably, he is there for her.

But their relationship is a complicated one.  He wants to be a casual lover and friend while she needs something deeper.  What drives the wedge of their separateness is their mutual fear.  As Stephanie learns to pull herself out of misery and live her life as normally as possible, Alain sinks deeper and deeper into trouble.  But somehow the two of them keep finding their way back to each other.

“Rust and Bone” is about how our lives are shaped by the people we love.  We cling to each other and from that the direction of our lives is decided. Audiard learned how to live his life long before he took the helm as director and decided to start telling stories, which is probably why he has much to say about the human condition.

Cotillard, with unwashed hair and no makeup, is still one of the most beautiful faces ever to grace the screen. Here, she must embody what it is like to be rejected by society as the undesirable, to lose the job she loved so much and to take a chance on a relationship with a guy who is emotionally cut off. Cotillard goes deep and delivers one of her best performances.

The audience lingered and applauded warmly and for a good long while at the end of the film, with Audiard's name getting its own round of applause.

Not everyone will connect with “Rust and Bone,” but for those who do the film will burrow deeply in — for those we've loved and lost, for the dreams we had we could never fulfill, for the moment we discovered that sooner or later life kicks you in the teeth and you have two choices: lay down and die or stand up and fight.

The beauty in this is that these characters learn to live with their broken bones, their missing limbs and absent mothers — their newly constructed hopes and dreams held together with rust and bone.

Philip Seymour Hoffman to Star in ‘A Most Wanted Man’

Philip Seymour Hoffman will star in a film adaption of John Le Carre's "A Most Wanted Man."

The Oscar winner and Tony nominee will play the leader of a covert Germany spy group looking into the case of Issa, a tortured part-Chechen, part-Russian with a claim to his family's fortune. While a series of people, including a banker and a female lawyer, try to help Issa, assorted intelligence agencies begin to dig into his true identity.

Hoffman is currently performing  on Broadway in "Death of a Salesman." He has received a 2012 Tony nomination for his portrayal of Willy Loman.

Film4 is co-financing and co-developing "A Most Wanted Man,"  which Anton Corbijn is directing. Corbijn is a prolific Dutch music video director who last directed "The American," starring George Clooney.

Hoffman's next two projects, Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" and Yaron Zilberman's "A Late Quartet," have both wrapped, and "Death of a Salesman" is slated to run through June 2.

"A Most Wanted Man" is slated to start production this fall.

Hollywood has often turned to Le Carre's oeuvre for inspiration, most recently with "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," which earned three Oscar nominations.

Reality TV Hits the Cannes Red Carpet

Reality TV is getting the Cannes treatment at the world’s premiere film festival. Italian director Matteo Garrone (pictured above right with actor Nando Paone) brought Reality to the fest’s competition, following up his critically acclaimed gangster pic Gomorrah several years ago. The film centers on a village fisherman who sacrifices everything for the perceived chance to become a reality-television celebrity.

After being persuaded to apply for the Italian version of Big Brother, Luciano gets a follow up interview in Rome. He is initially reluctant to pursue the role, but after an interview he thinks went well, Luciano begins to believe he’s in the running for the series. After returning to Naples, he begins to believe he’s still “being cast” as he goes about his daily life. Soon, he lives as if he’s already on the show. A chance meeting with people from Rome turns into an “incognito casting session,” and soon it gets worse as he loses sense of actual reality.

“After Gomorrah, I was waiting for a theme that would be as powerful,” Garrone said in Cannes on Friday morning. “I wanted a surprising film, but after Gomorrah, I didn’t realize I’d be hitting a brick wall.”

The film is chock full of thematic takeaways, including the religious metaphor that through good works, one can achieve paradise: In the film, Luciano begins to give up his worldly possessions, believing the people secretly watching him will be charmed by his selflessness — much to the horror of his family. Reality could also be an indictment of the meteoric rise of reality television itself over the past decade, though Garrone said the film takes a neutral stance — at least officially.

Reality TV Hits the Cannes Red Carpet“We shot the film without trying to be critical in any way,” he said. “The main character…

Donna Summer’s Long Last Dance: From Reluctant Moaner, Casablanca Queen to Emeritus Class Act

If we like our stars to be conflicted, Donna Summer certainly fit the bill.

As her career crested in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, the singer, who died Thursday at the age of 63, was one of the most “out” born-again Christians in the music business, forever reconciling herself with the fact that her career had been founded on a 17-minute musical orgasm.

Also read: Donna Summer, Queen of Disco, Dead at 63

In the age of coke, mirror balls, a relentless 4/4 thump-thump and giving yourself over to absolute pleasure, Summer was a non-sensualist who just wanted to sing.

There were moments of tension with a fan base that wanted to preserve her as a disco icon — especially when she was accused (falsely, she said) of expressing her religious beliefs in a way that resulted in a rumor that one of the queens of gay music was a homophobe. But all was reconciled in the end.

Although the mass pop audience hadn’t given Summer a Top 10 pop hit since 1988, the club crowd continued to embrace her newer music, and she had four songs hit No. 1 on Billboard’s dance music chart in the last half-dozen years, the last chart-topper in 2010.

Perhaps more tellingly, she even started performing “Love to Love You Baby” in concert again around 2005 — minus the epic moans. Summer loved to love us loving the song that first brought her to the dance.

The preeminent diva of the disco era died Thursday in Florida, where she lived with husband Bruce Sudano after a stint as Nashville residents. Even some who worked with her weren’t aware of she had cancer, as she’d been making rounds in Los Angeles as recently as two months ago.

Summer first started recording in 1971, using her birth name, Gaines, for her earliest UK single in 1971. Her first album, three years later, wasn’t even released in the United States.

It wasn’t until “Love to Love You Baby” established her as an overt sex symbol that she broke through, much as she spent ensuing years trying to live down one of history’s most orgasmic songs (and the equally suggestive album cover art).

“If I’d known seven years ago that all I had to do was groan, I would have been groaning!” she joked to Rolling Stone.

As she recalled it in her autobiography, she tried to imagine herself as Marilyn Monroe during the recording, which took place in a candlelit studio with Summer prone on the floor (furthering the song’s legend, naturally). She had no idea all 17 minutes would come out as an LP-side-length track; she was just vamping to give the producers an extended idea of what they might do. Of course, innocent top 40 listeners didn’t necessarily know what all the hubbub was about, since the single version was shortened by 13 minutes and (about) 130 orgasms.

“I have so much more to offer,” she complained at the time – and indeed she did, as the woman who first made her name off the non-musical sounds she made on a record proved to be even better at singing than heavy breathing. And she did have breath control, mind you: “Dim All the Lights,” arguably the best song of her career, had her sustaining a note for 16 seconds, purportedly a record for a top 40 hit.

After 1975′s “Love to Love You,” it was another two years before Summer had another monster hit, in the form of “I Feel Love.” That might be the most influential of all her hits, though not so much because of anything she did as Giorgio Moroder’s electro textures.

“Last Dance,” the theme from 1978′s disco-sploitation picture "Thank God It’s Friday," had plenty of production and writing brilliance to spare, not least of all in the last-minute addition of a balladic opening that made the eventual transition to pure disco all the more exciting. But from here on out, it was Summer’s singing that made her smashes smashes.

The “Bad Girls” double-album in 1978, besides being her swan song for Casablanca Records, also marked the end of an era when it came to Summer being willing to position herself as a sex kitten.

Also readBarbra Streisand on Donna Summer: 'She Had an Amazing Voice'

Her duet with Barbra Streisand, “No More Tears (Enough is Enough),” established her as a Class Act once and for all. But there would be commercial limitations to coincide with de-tarting her act so severely. “No More Tears” was her last No. 1 on Billboard’s pop chart, though that may have had as much to do with the “disco sucks” side finally winning in the culture – temporarily, anyway – as Summer’s cleaned-up act.

Summer fell in with a fellow evangelical Christian, producer Michael Omartian, for a run of synthy, less bass-heavy hits like “She Works Hard for the Money,” the theme song of ‘80s Day-Glo pop feminism. Not incidentally, it was her first music-video hit, in the dawn of the MTV era. Minor hits followed, including an unlikely take on the Jon Anderson/Vangelis mood ballad “State of Independence.” But a mojo had been lost.

A Wall Street Journal review of a poorly attended 2008 amphitheater show in New Hampshire describes a scene in which Summer is peopling half her set with songs from her “Crayons” comeback, which probably only dozens of audience members had bothered to buy, while withstanding cries for “Hot Stuff” and other oldies she’d barely have time to squeeze into even an all-hits set. Clearly she wasn’t resigned to being strictly a nostalgia act, which might have accounted in part for her long time away.

But maybe we should feel most nostalgic, in an age of divas who’d do anything to get ahead, that Donna Summer never met a discotheque she couldn’t class up.

Exclusive: Ed Sheeran Talks New Album Inspirations and Shows Us His Tattoos Too!

Filed under:

After writing songs for awesome bands like One Direction and catching the attention of stars like Jamie Foxx, it’s no surprise that everyone is anticipating Ed Sheeran’s own stuff.

Recently we sat down with British singer-songwriter to chat about his upcoming album “+”…yep, that’s really the name of it.

So what should we expect?

“I have to be honest, being a singer-songwriter I write very selfishly, I write for me,” he told us.

Ed’s not afraid to put his relationship business out there in his songs either. He’s a relationship kind of guy too, confessing that every love song he has ever written, like those on the new album, are about his ex-girlfriend that he dated for 4 years.

Sound familiar Adele?

He also admitted that one of his ultimate dreams is to be married, have kids, and be comfortable.

Is this for real?!

He does have a bad-boy flare though! Ed gave us a little tour of his now 21 tattoos that he has gotten while on the road.

So hott!… (Sorry, Mr. Sheeran!)

His new album is available on June 12. Until then, listen to some of the songs off of “+” below…

Are you digging Ed’s sound?

‘Hysteria’ Review: Nothing Like a Feel-Good Victorian Vibrator Comedy

"Hysteria" is a fun fling of a movie about medical science at its shakiest. Literally.

This amusing period comedy chronicles the invention of the vibrator in the late Victorian era, when doctors used early versions of the electrical device to bring women to sexual satisfaction. This was done in the name of treating women thought to be suffering from “hysteria,” a vague diagnostic catch-all that covered pretty much all female complaints from melancholia to mania.

The male doctors, unable even to envision what to them was the then-preposterous notion that women might have sexual needs or could achieve actual orgasm, viewed the vibrator as a scientific device that relieved female patients of built-up, ahem, pressure, leaving them calm and appropriately docile.

As Mortimer Granville (Hugh Dancy), the initially priggish but idealistic young English doctor who first uses the vibrator in “Hysteria,” claims, “It’s strictly a medical treatment that stimulates the nervous system.”

Tell that to the scores of eager female patients crowding his waiting room.

The medical use of electrical vibrators by doctors to cure women’s “hysteria” in the 1800s was also the subject of “In the Next Room,” a well-reviewed, emotionally complex play by Sarah Ruhl that was done on Broadway in 2009 and at South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa, Ca. in 2010.

Director Tanya Wexler takes a lighter approach in this — let’s just say it — feel good comedy. “Hysteria” is actually more of a romantic comedy, since a major component of its story is how Mortimer finds himself engaged to Emily Dalrymple (Felicity Jones), a proper Victorian maiden, while strongly attracted to radical Charlotte Dalrymple (Maggie Gyllenhaal), her social activist older sister. Both women are the daughters of the pompous, successful establishment physician (Jonathan Pryce) for whom Mortimer works as a junior partner in London.

When a wealthy inventor friend (Rupert Everett) develops the vibrator, Mortimer is quick to grasp its medical potential. He and his fellow physicians had been manually masturbating their female patients before, a practice that required lengthy sessions until patients found relief and which led to cramps and soreness problems from repetitive use in the physician’s fingers and hands. The “percussor,” as Mortimer dubs his vibrator, cuts the time spent with patients down to minutes and relieves the physical stress on the doctor.

“Hysteria” conveys all of this with admirable economy and humor. Just as Mortimer here performs his buzzy medical magic from behind decorous partial curtains which shield the patient from actual view, so the movie deftly suggests more than it actually specifies either visually or verbally.

Dancy makes for an appealing leading man, all shy charm and embarrassment, while Gyllenhaal provides a lively foil, her character merrily challenging Mortimer with her progressive views at every turn.

Historical note: There was an actual J. Mortimer Granville who devised a medical vibrator in 1880, but the movie does little more than appropriate his name, invention and era. The real Granville specified that his vibrators were to be used to relieve commonplace muscle aches and vociferously objected when medical peers began applying his massagers to women’s private parts. (For everything you ever wanted to know about sexually-flavored medical treatment for women during that era, click here.)

“Snot Bubbles” Got Brooklyn Decker Her ‘Battleship’ Role

Filed under:

Ask Brooklyn Decker what landed her a Battleship role and she will tell you it wasn’t all about her killer good looks or awesome talent…

Nope, the blond bombshell had to have a little bit more than that for this one.

Brooklyn and Battleship director Peter Berg recently talked to us about how she snagged the role of Sam in the upcoming film.

Convinced she wasn’t strong enough, during auditions, Berg told her that there was only one way she could get the tough-girl gig…

“The only way to get the role and prove I was strong enough was if I had tears coming out of my eyes and snot bubbles coming out of my nose.”

Uhh, gross!

Brooklyn totally did what she had to do and produced tears and snot bubbles like it was her j-o-b and landed the role!

The snot bubble audition wasn’t the only Battleship silliness going on, Rihanna admitted to us that there were tons of on-set pranks too.

Don’t forget to check out Battleship…it hits theaters on Friday!

Bobby Brown Releases Whitney Houston Tribute Song, World Slaps Collective Forehead

Bobby Brown took to The Tonight Show stage to debut a new song he wrote about life since Whitney Houston’s death … we wish we were kidding.

The song, released online a week ago but little-noticed because Bobby Brown’s career has been on a 15-year tailspin, is a confession of sorts.

Bobby admits he “messed up pretty bad” and begs his late ex-wife … “Don’t let me die.” That’s right, even after her death, it’s all about BB.

Bobby Brown – Don’t Let Me Die

The song also features the lyrics, “I didn’t realize that every breath I took was from you … You were my air.” That’s actually somewhat nice.

Brown also sings. “I didn’t know who you were, didn’t know what we had. Now I’m stuck living in the past … trying to get the pieces back. But I guess now you’re gone.”

Guess so.

Brown, who’s been making the media rounds to reiterate that Whitney’s death is not his fault, performed the track live last night for the FIRST TIME EVER, will be releasing the sensual track on his new album in June, just months after she died.

Hey, gotta strike while the iron is hot.

‘Breakout Kings’ Canceled After 2 Seasons

"Breakout Kings" has been given the ax by A&E.

The series, from former "Prison Break" team Nick Santora and Matt Olmstead, has been canceled after two seasons, the second of which wrapped up April 29.

The series revolved around a group of U.S. marshals who enlist prisoners to help them catch escaped convicts, with time taken off of their sentences for each fugitive captured.

Malcolm Goodwin, who played former gang leader Shea Daniels on the series, acknowledged the cancellation on his Twitter account Thursday, writing, "So Breakout Kings is canceled. Thx to all 4 the luv & support over the last 2 seasons! It's been a fun experience! Much luv! On to the next."

Speaking of "the next," Olmstead seems to have that ground covered; he's moving on become showrunner of Dick Wolf's new drama "Chicago Fire," which was recently ordered to series by NBC.

Cannes 2012: Roman Polanski Tells His Story – ‘How Do You Like Me Now?’

If you didn’t like Roman Polanski before, you’re not going to like him any better after seeing him tell his life story in “Roman Polanski: A Film Memoir.”

Producer Andrew Braunsberg, one of the director’s closest friends, sits with him to talk through an extraordinary life: a childhood torn to shreds by the Holocaust, a film career in Poland, his marriage to Sharon Tate and her murder by the Manson clan, his rape of Samantha Geimer and the media circus aftermath and his life in exile, capped by arrest in Switzerland in 2009 after an extradition request by the Los Angeles district attorney.

It’s enough twists and turns to make anyone gasp. Yet Polanski recounts these events with calm and humor and a sense of intelligent perspective.

All that doesn’t help. It still feels self-serving.

On the heels of the far more probing – and useful — documentary by Marina Zenovich last year, “Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired,” this “Film Memoir” resonates more like a home movie than a doc.

In the hands of a more disinterested interviewer, the film might have uncovered the real person behind the competing mythologies.

Who is Roman Polanski? This is his version of himself. Notably missing is the Polanski whose life is an emblem of the cultural upheaval of the '60s and '70s – both the Helter Skelter murders that helped end the era of peace and love, and the drug-and-sex fuelled party that followed, of which he was a part.

Polanski is moved to tears by things that may be new to us – his father’s return to the family bosom during Nazi deportations; his mother’s dispatch to Auschwitz where she died.

But he is composed when talking about Sharon Tate’s murder, and equanimous when talking about the Geimer rape and his treatment by the legal system (the Zenovich documentary showed that the judge reneged on an agreement for Polanski to get probation with time served).

If Polanski does not visibly wallow in self-pity – and he may have cause to do so – he also does not spend time on self-reflection. He is far too proud, even if one feels his deep intelligence in all his comments. Only late in the film does he allow that “of course it was wrong” what he did, and calls Geimer a “double victim,” for enduring the media gauntlet.

The tendentious Braunsberg – who was sitting beside Polanski when the director got the call about Sharon Tate saying, “They’re all dead” — doesn't allow an uncomfortable moment. Neither does director Laurent Bouzereau.

Like everything else in Polanski’s life, reactions to this new documentary will be bifurcated: the French will love him all the more as a victimized genius. Americans will think he’s concocted a tendentious piece of drivel to excuse his past.

Neither are right. And both are.

Literally and figuratively. Both Charlize Theron and Kristen Stewart arrived on the red carpet in dresses that left very little to the imagination.

Russell Brand on Katy Perry: Nothing But Love!

Russell Brand and Katy Perry might as well be teaching Celebrity Breakups 101.

Proving that a split doesn’t have to be bitter or contentious just because it’s painful, the comedian opened up to Ellen DeGeneres about his recent divorce and had only positive things to say about former wife Katy Perry.

“I still love her as a human being,” he said. “But, sometimes when you’re in a relationship I suppose it doesn’t work out, does it? You can’t absolutely make everything the way you want it to be in life. But that doesn’t mean I regret it or anything.”

“Sometimes things are just different and then you move with that and try and remain in contact with what is beautiful about yourself and each other.”

“I was very happy to be married with her,” Brand continued. “She’s such a beautiful human being and I just have only love and positivity for her.”

Perry has since rebounded with Florence + The Machine guitarist Robert Ackroyd, with whom she was spotted packing on the PDA at Coachella.

Still, it’s time to move on. Last week, Brand finally unfollowed her on Twitter.

Also on Ellen, Brand weighed in on various newsworthy items of the day, including the Time Magazine breastfeeding cover. You gotta watch.

Jane Lynch Tells Republicans: ‘Money To be Made in Gay Marriage’ (Video)

Jane Lynch has a message for Republicans and its all about dollars and cents.

On "The Rachel Maddow Show" Wednesday night, the  "Glee" star said that the GOP should embrace gay marriage, as President Barack Obama did last week, not just because she believes it's the right thing to do, but because it offers an economic opportunity.

"Now, I, Jane Lynch am not normally one to give career advice to Republicans, but guys and gals, there’s money to be made on promoting gay rights within the Republican party," Lynch said during Maddow's “Best New Thing in the World” segment.

How, you might ask? Lynch argued that Republican political strategists can hike their fees to GOP candidates by offering coaching tips on outreach to the gay community.

"Someone is going to have to teach Republicans to talk about gay rights, without seeming like they’ve caved to the Democrats," Lynch said. "Some strategists are going to have to make it their specialty to teach Republicans how to be pro-gay while still sounding angry."

The Republican party and the presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney have publicly opposed legalizing marriage for gay and lesbian couples, but Lynch said that they are on the wrong side of history.

As evidence, the actress cited a memo from one of the party's own — former President George W. Bush's pollster Jan van Lohuizen.

In a message to fellow Republicans obtained by Politico, Lohuizen said the party must change its tune on the issue, because support for gay marriage is intensifying.

"As more people have become aware of friends and family members who are gay, attitudes have begun to shift at an accelerated pace," van Lohuizen wrote. "This is not about a generational shift in attitudes, this is about people changing their thinking as they recognize their friends and family members who are gay or lesbian.”

Lynch did an ace job filling Maddow's wonky and acerbic shoes, but she told the MSNBC host that even that she's sticking with her day job.

"I would love to play [a cable news host]," Lynch said. "I don't know that I would want to do it day in and day out. I know how much you work and how you have to have your finger on the pulse."
